Irish Castles for Sale

For centuries, castles have held a peculiar sort of power over imaginative people. They seem to forget that these castles were originally built as fortresses, not necessarily as things of beauty. However, to our modern utilitarian minds, these castles are extravagantly arrayed in all manner of things unnecessary for protection from a sieging army. The turrets, the towers, the arched doorways, and the intricately carved gargoyles are all inexplicably linked to maidens and knights and lords and dragons; to betrayals and romances, births and deaths, war and peace. Many of the castles around Europe would still be in great condition if it weren't for the sieges they have had to endure, and the catapulted boulders their walls have had to withstand. These castles were built to last thousands of years, into our generations and beyond.

The Irish castles listed below are for sale. Perhaps your imagination will run wild with these pictures and details and you will suddenly remember that you have a rich uncle. Perhaps you will merely sigh and store up this information for a later day. Whatever the outcome, I hope you will enjoy.

If you are interested in forming a partnership with another entrepreneur to purchase one of these castles, please leave a note in the contacts section, or use the "contact" button on the right to contact me and to connect you with others who may be interested in buying the other half of the castle.

(Note: I am not in any way affiliated with the owners or the relator agents/companies/auctioneers of these castles. I have a fancy for castles myself, and this research was done to satisfy my own curiosity, not to advertise these castles.)

1. Cloghan Castle for Sale in Ireland

New to the market is Cloghan Castle, a vine-covered beauty, built on 152 acres of lush and wooded land. This is considered the oldest, inhabited castle in Ireland, and was built by an Irishman named Eoghan O’Madden, a Gaelic chieftain who owned more land than any chieftain before him. His story is fascinating in its own right, as he travelled on many crusades with his father and married a Norman women, probably one who he met on his crusades. In 1601, after an attack which left the castle burned, the Crown gave Cloghan Castle to Sir John Moore, and it stayed in his family for close to eighty years.

The current owners have completely restored this castle, taking it from a bare and windswept ruin to a luxurious medieval replica. Says the owner, Michael Burke,

"The aim was to recreate what it was like to live in a medieval castle, but without having to suffer the deprivation of thirteenth century living, initially with the idea of using it as a family home. We used local craftsmen and tried to source local materials as much as possible. While it was a huge undertaking we never felt we had taken on too much, we really enjoyed the work and feel that when we die we will have left something for future generations. It’s a landmark that would otherwise be just a heap of stones today."

The interior includes six bedrooms (two of which are en-suite), a Great hall, a dining room, drawing room, office, kitchen, store room, service quarters, all of which are spread over three floors. The castle is host to hundreds of special events each year, including weddings and parties, and also enjoys taxation discounts for its historic value. Surrounding the castle are three individual gardens including and herb garden and terraced garden. Beyond that are acres of wooded hillside and pastureland where a flock of the rare Jacob sheep graze. In the winter, flooding rivers create 7 mile lake, which becomes a refuge for thousands of wild birds.

Contact Helen Cassidy, the auctioneer, for more information on this castle or to make an offer.

2. Heathfield Castle for Sale in Ireland

West Limerick Scenic drive will take you past this charming castle, straight out of an old-world faerie tale. Though the outside of this castle looks thoroughly historic, the inside is outfitted with all the modern conveniences of a 21st century mansion. Heated Italian marble floors and thermostats in each room effectively warm the stone and plaster rooms, and numerous large windows make the inside of this castle light and airy. The round tower has a spiral staircase, and interior doorways were hewn into the traditional gothic arch shape, adding to this castle's fairytale design.

Unlike many other medieval castles, this one has great floor plans and nicely placed individual rooms within the larger rooms, giving the interior a cozier feel. Five beautiful bedrooms, a gigantic kitchen made of marble and stainless steel, a greeting room that looks out over the front gardens, a great hall with a fireplace and arched ceilings, and many more beautiful rooms, curving staircases, and sunny hallways give this castle the feel of homeyness. What's more, an intercom system connects all the rooms!

The outside gardens rival Hampton Court, with beautiful terracing, pond and streams, twelve waterfalls (including one 12 metres high!), little stone walls along winding pathways, and benches placed strategically in romantic places under flowering trees. My favorite is the adjoining Ballinruane Wood: 1,000 acres of fantasy-land exploring potential (though the grounds also include a golf course for the more structured sporting).

This castle is also available through Helen Cassidy with Premier Properties Ireland.

Castle buyers should do their research!

Helen Cassidy, interviewed by Medieval News says that castle buyers and owners often have many legal issues to overcome. "You do have to be lion-hearted to take one of these on. People who buy them tend to have done their homework." She goes on to say that even though a castle is a huge piece of real estate, it really doesn't make a very good financial investment. Restoration is nearly a constant project for castle owners, and often castles have terrible insulation and can't retain heat-- thus making them expensive to keep warm. The legal ramifications of buying an historical attraction are also something to consider. According to Helen Cassidy, a real estate auctioneer in Galway who specializes in castles, the castle buyer should research the history of castles he considers purchasing and should get good legal help to find out what has been done to these castles in the past that may decrease or increase their value.

In spite of all the legal and financial expense, castles will continue to draw people to them, whether they happen to be driving by on a scenic byway, or if they are making a planned stop. Many castle owners don't live in their castles, but instead charge tourists to see inside. Others have turned their castles into bed and breakfasts, or advertise their gardens or Great Hall for destination weddings in Ireland. This brings in income for castle owners, and provides great motivation to keep the castle in good shape.

3. Strongford Castle for Sale in Ireland

Located in beautiful pastureland near Craughwell, County Galway, this castle was built in the fifteenth century by the wealthy de Burgos family, direct descendants of William the Conqueror. Two gargoyles snarl at every visitor that comes through the arched doorway. Once inside, be cautious of the "murder hole" in the ceiling above the entryway, the hole through which inhabitants could drop dangerous substances or heavy missiles on the enemy who came through their doorway. The galley kitchen is accessible from the front hallway, outfitted with a modern sink and countertop. As you continue to explore this old castle, you will notice that all the interior walls are whitewashed stone, and small slit windows give a narrow view of the scenery outside. On the ground floor, the Great Hall is warmed by a wood stove and well lit by a chandelier on the ceiling. A long winding stone stair leads upstairs, where the lordly master bedroom awaits in all its regality: dark wood cross beams on the ceiling above, small slit windows, red deal floor, expansive space in every direction, and wonder of wonders, a shower in the castle turret.

Clonony Castle for Sale: Photos

4. Clonony Castle for Sale in Ireland

Clonony Castle: built in 1500s by the McCoughlan clan who owned the surrounding country and built their castles at over a dozen other site. Clonony Castle: the hiding place of Anne Boleyn's family when King Henry VIII decided it was time to execute his second wife, Anne. Clonony Castle: owned by other noblemen including Matthew de Renzi in 1620, and by a barrister-at-law named Edmond Molony who wrote a famous epitaph on his wife's tombstone praising her for her talent in watercolors and her "passionate, and tender" love for him as a virtuous woman. This is the castle for you if you prefer a rich historical background and meager to rustic livability. Standing tall on three acres of verdant grass, and surrounded by a moat, Clonony castle has lost little of its original medieval appearance.

Photos and more info available from Premier Properties Ireland.

5. Killahara Castle for Sale

The great thing about Killahara Castle is that the owners began a complete restoration of the castle in 2006 and just recently finished the job. Now the castle has a great heating system, wide windows on the all floors that let in light and warmth, subtle electric wiring for easy electricity, and a low expectation for future maintenance. Wide spiral stairs and larger living space than you would normally expect from a vertical castle like this complete the picture. This fortress also boasts incredible views from all sides, and sits on seven acres of its own land including a beech-tree forest and a little avenue that runs through it. The castle is located near historical Dovea, which gives it a rural feel without entirely isolating it. This property (and the photos I used) are available through Vivium and Premier Properties Ireland.

Many Irish Castles for Sale

Ireland literally has thousands of castles, and many have appeared on the market recently. They range from having lavishly decorated and completely remodeled interior, to being wall-less or roof-less piles of historic rubble. Some castle sellers have compiled an in-depth historical account of all their castles have been through. Other castles have a history that can only be imagined (or have yet to be discovered)!

Whatever your interest in these Irish castles for sale, know that there are plenty of agents and resources available to help you make a mature decision in the midst of your childish fascination for castle lore.

WOW! I just stumbled across this hub! Absolutely marvelous. Actually, I had to run out and buy a lottery ticket before I could leave a comment. Since most of us will never be able to afford the fantasy, I thought I would buy a lottery ticket and dream!

Jesse Monroe 14 months ago

why is there no prices? where can i find a castle for around the same as a house? is that even possible? well thanks for posting this! i love ireland. its my favourite country. i really want to visit it soon.

Jane Grey profile image

Jane Grey Hub Author 14 months ago

Jesse, I have prices attached to the castles that I know them for, but many agents and sellers want to negotiate terms and prices with the individual buyer, so finding a price on the castle can be rare. A castle for the same price as a house will be very hard to find, as castles usually fall into the category of mansions and historical monuments when it comes to pricing, because these facts add greatly to its value.

Have dreamed of ownership of a castle In Ireland or Scotland and found your site while surfing the Internet. Can't think of one realistic or sound reason for ownership other than I can afford a dream like this so will be looking forward to exploring all available. Would much prefer something livable rather than a total fixer-upper. Thanks for your website.

have you done any research on people building castles right now? I know of folk who are building a stone keep by hand. What an impressive legacy? Two generations are working with free time and using stones from the land to lay foundations and walls. They get help as they need it. Bet you can find others who are doing the same. Thanks for the read and the beautiful images.

I had no idea castles were for sale either until I started doing the research, and then I found they were popping up all over! It certainly is a huge purchase decision, but there are plenty of informed agents and restorers that can help with making a big decision like that. Absolutely fascinating stuff. I've always said that if I were to ever have a lot of money, I'd not necessarily be one for the all the toys...but a castle? Oh man. A CASTLE? Would it even be a question? Or maybe I could just have a house built with one of these beauties in mind.

    Jane Grey profile image

Jane Grey Hub Author 2 years ago

Springboard, your last statement is the way to go, I think! Buy some land when the prices drop and erect a castle/house that will be in your family for generations. That's what the castles were built for, anyway! We need to have an architectural scheme that is not so utilitarian, but will be beautiful, established homesteads for children's children in the years to come.

    Thanks for reading!

Jane, very true. So many subdivisions I drive through simply have houses with no character at all. There's just no design to them. Yeah, they are spacious, even somewhat nice. But that's about it. There's no story. No uniqueness. Nothing special. It's something sadly amiss from today's architecture...

Then I think architects nowadays are as cookie cutter out of college as the houses are ultimately built. Architects used to be artists. Not so anymore.

    Jane Grey profile image

Jane Grey Hub Author 2 years ago

Springboard, that's exactly it! There's an artistry about the way these castles were made that has been lost in modern architecture. Ultimately I think it comes down to where our perspective is. If we're only looking to finish a job and make a few extra bucks in a finite world, then so be it, a concrete house with a bit of paint works well. But if we want to build something that will last for centuries, if we want the impact of our lives to be felt in a positive way in the many years to come, we'll be building, creating, and beautifying our homes and castles so that they'll last.

chakefhr, A half castle is a great idea! Maybe you could find someone to go in on it with you and start a bed and breakfast chain to help defray the cost. Castle honeymoons and destination (castle) weddings are very popular these days, so there's an idea for your castle as well!

    Jane Grey profile image

Jane Grey Hub Author 2 years ago

Video Express, that would certainly make your castle "experience" authentic! Perhaps you could do research on your castle and give tours about its history while wearing your armor or crowne.

I have a new dream: to buy a castle- or more accurately build a replica here in the U.S.! With all the madern comforts, of course. I LOVE castles. They are so old and so rich with history and I love to imagine what it might have been like during those historic times. I love big houses but castles are the ultimate- even better than mansions!

What a wonderful journey into the past. I am part Irish and my partner is Irish. She spent some time there as a little girl and would love to go back. I have been to England and France but not to Ireland. To afford to buy one of these beauties, I would do it in a heart beat. The pictures you post are spectacular. I let my mind wander as I traveled through the past.Thank you for the experience. You have my vote, thumbs up.

seraphim11, keep dreaming and maybe someday you will have the chance to act upon those dreams! Real Estate in the UK is getting cheaper because the British pound is getting weaker. This is certainly a buyer's market!

Jane Grey Hub Author 2 years ago

Tina Ann, What a lovely idea! Several castles have been built in the US, and though they don't have quite the same historical value (yet!) as UK castles, the dreamy and romantic qualities of a castle can still be there. Keep your eye out for a future hub on castles for sale in the US! There are quite a few hidden gems.

Saddlerider, Thank you for your very kind complements! I was hoping to give you a bit of visual poetry with the pictures and information, and it makes me happy to know it pleased you. You have a special heritage, being part Irish. I hope you can visit the green island some day!

GmaGoldie, It certainly would be fun to find out you are a descendent of one of the former inhabitants of these castles! That is a likely possibility, and there is much research still to be done on many of the histories of these castles. Thank you for your comment!

RosWebbART, what a beautiful place to live! Have you ever driven past any of these castles? You're right, the central heating bills would be huge, but these castles often have big fireplaces or smaller living quarters that you could decide to selectively heat.

    Jane Grey profile image

Jane Grey Hub Author 2 years ago

myawn, It certainly would require a large utility bill, but I think you could close up one half the castle and light fires in the hearths of the rooms in the other half. But yes, a knight in shining armor would be nice!

Liz Kirsten, Thank you so much! Glad you found this interesting; I did try to choose pictures that would show readers and potential buyers what they would be getting! I have always been fascinated with Ireland and castles as well. There's so much scope for the imagination!

When I studied abroad in England, I saw many castles. The ones in Scottland were my favorite. How much are these actually selling for?

    Jane Grey profile image

Jane Grey Hub Author 22 months ago

Carl, I love the ones in Scotland the best too! The history of the Scottish people's fight for freedom and liberty is what appeals to me, and makes their architecture all the more noble.

I am not aware of how much castles like this have actually been sold for since I only recently began to be interested in the topic, but most of them are priced somewhere 400,00 euros to 900,000 euros. Contact the individual real estate agents if you'd like more specific details.

Vandelay, I was surprised they weren't higher priced as well, but if you think about it, the pricing follows the trends of all real estate these days. It's a buyer's market. The fact that the Euro isn't doing extremely well helps lower the price also.

Princess, I'm glad it piqued your curiosity! From what I've seen, castle prices have been dropping all over Europe in conjunction with the weakening economy. This will be good for Americans who are looking at purchasing property in Europe, at least for a little while, since the dollar doesn't seem to be dropping as quickly in value as other European currencies.

That comment about cloghan being 'one of the only castles actually built by an Irishman' is - with respect - utter nonsense. There are about 1200 tower houses in the country, built mainly between 1400 and 1600 there are large numbers in Gaelic areas built by Gaelic lords. In fact tower houses are more common (at least in survival in areas of Gaelic settlement) Even to suggests that the descendants of the Anglo-Normans during that period - the old english - were not Irish is something of a nonsense
