Castles for Sale in Scotland
96Stirling Castle
Ducking our heads to avoid decapitation by the glowering stone doorway above us, my sister and I descended into the unfinished dungeons of Stirling Castle, once the headquarters of Robert the Bruce and his warriors. Though we had thoroughly explored the rest of the castle with the help of colorful signs and even more colorful volunteer tour guides, we were craving the authentic dirt and rot that could be found only in the bowels of this mostly-restored stone fortress. I don't know what we were expecting to find down there, but we found it: dark tunnels and cramped rooms nearly endlessly connected to each other like closets leading to more closets, the ceiling descending more and more in each new room until we were doubled in half and blind in the darkness when we reached the last cell. We imagined the crunching sound under one of our footsteps was a rotten bone from some ne'er do-well enemy of Scotland the Brave, though it sounded more like a Cadbury chocolate wrapper than anything else.
Sir Walter Scott described this castle when at the height of its glory:
The Castle gates were open flung,
The quivering drawbridge rocked and rung,
And echoed loud the flinty street
Beneath the coursers' clattering feet,
As slowly down the steep descent
Fair Scotland's King and nobles went,
While all along the crowded way
Was jubilee and loud huzza.

Scottish Castles Now 30% More Affordable for International Buyers
Though Stirling Castle is not for sale and probably will never be, Sir Walter Scott's words thrill and excite all who have dreamed of living in their own castle. There are many other castles that are for sale in Scotland, many of which have become more affordable in recent years. Advisors are encouraging potential castle buyers to do their research, as many Scottish castles have become 30% cheaper for international buyers during recent months due to the weakening of the British pound. CKD agents say that most castles have been holding their value, and this certainly is a buyer's market. Leave a comment at the end of this post if you'd be interested in splitting the cost with another entrepreneur, and I'll give you a spot on this page to post your request/idea and give contact info.
1. Woodside Castle of Scotland for Sale
Woodside Castle Interior
1. Woodside Castle for Sale
This brilliant Grade-A white castle has recently been completely restored, and is now as habitable and hassle-free an historic castle as it is a beautiful mansion. Originally built in 1551, Woodside castle was just a box-shaped tower, or as some described it, a stone barn. Architectural additions have so enhanced the stature and size of this castle that the square tower is now hardly recognizable, though the original structure is intact and healthy. The accommodation of this castle spans five floors, complete with stone and marble fireplaces, a newly refinished dining kitchen and conservatory, four reception rooms, fifteen bedrooms including tower bedrooms and a master bedroom/bath/dressing room, elaborate plasterwork and wood paneling, and vaulted dungeons for the fun of it. Situated on an idyllic and secluded 60 acre estate, only 20 miles from Glasgow.
Guide price at £1.95 million. Contact agents CKD Galbraith in Ayr if you're interested.
2. Midmar Castle of Scotland for Sale
Restored Midmar Castle for Sale in Scotland
Newly Reduced Price: Midmar Castle, built by William Wallace
Located in Aberdeenshire just 16 miles west of Aberdeen, Midmar Castle is legendarily thought to have been built in the fifteenth century by WIlliam Wallace for Sir Thomas Longavale, though the Broun family owned the land of Midmar from the 1300s. The design is called a "Z" shape which is a traditional defensive design of three connected towers. The outer two towers are round and the middle tower is square, which was exactly how it looked for many years, plain and utilitarian, until a family of expert mason workers added on the adorning checkered corbeling, roll-mounted window surrounds, and the faerie-taleish circular turrets with pointed "candle snuffer" roofs that you see now. In 1977, the Historic Scotland organization guided the current owner through the restoration process after he bought the castle in a considerable state of disrepair ("a pile of rubbish," as some people fondly recall), but the castle is in beautiful condition now, and even managed to avoid the supercilious "restorations" of the Victorian Era which would have robbed Midmar Castle of its historic beauty. Much of the original panelling, plaster, and stonework still remains inside as well.
Gardens surrounding the castle are sectioned with walls, and an even broader surrounding parkland and 185 acres of grazing land makes a pretty picture and profitable opportunities. Midmar Castle is hospitable indoors, as well, with ten bedrooms and six reception rooms.
Asking price is now £ 3.5 mill. (a recent reduction in 2 mill.). Real estate information and photos from Savills. Contact the Savills website for more info on this castle.
3. A Huge Inexpensive Fixer-Upper: Westhall Castle
Westhall Castle Under Offer
Unlike the castles I mentioned previously, Westhall castle in Oyne, Aberdeenshire, is in need of renovation, as the previous owners used it as a hotel and then left in 1989 (or 1992-- the sources differ) and it has been vacant since then. However, for the asking price of only £850,000, this sixteenth century castle of five reception rooms and fifteen bedrooms includes 54 acres, a walled garden and unfinished courtyard, a tennis court, ice rink, swimming pool and three staff cottages with paddocks (pastureland for grazing animals).
Just how much renovation does Westhall castle require? Thanks to the excellent photojournalism of MeowMixed on Flickr, we have detailed documentation of the amount of fixing up a potential buyer would have to consider. Several of the rooms have water damage on the ceiling or floor, with the skeleton of rotten floorboards spiking in every direction like cracked ribs. One picture reveals walls collapsing around a secondary staircase, probably from water damage or rotting wood. Opening one door will surprise the viewer with a pile of concrete rubble, perhaps from a collapsed wall, support column, or ceiling (the picture doesn't reveal enough to know where the rubble is from). Other more minor repairs include dangling light fixtures, broken windows, stained and shredded wallpaper, dirty or water-damaged floors, and general cleaning as there are a few rooms filled with litter that was left by the last owners. Some wall paneling, molding, delicate fixtures, and wallpapers would be lovely to keep in place, if possible, as it gives the castle a classy elegance from another era.
Update as of Jul. 2011, Westhall Castle is now listed "Under Offer." It may or may not be sold at this point. Contact Savills for more information.
4. Fordyce Castle for Sale in Scotland
For those who would prefer to live in a little castle in a little village one and a half miles from the Moray Firth Coast, Fordyce Castle in the town of Fordyce, is the one for you! Except for the added wing that you can see to the left of the castle, much of the castle retains its original shape and quaintness. The walls aren't quite straight, the stone work reminisce of ancient days in this little town, and the shot windows are just as narrow and plentiful as when the original Lord Provost of Aberdeen (Thomas Menzies) had to defend his princess. What's more, this castle includes the title of Baron (worth £45,000 to £100,000), as well as potentially the current owner's holiday-letting and five star catering business. Offers above £800,000. Castle Duncan Forums has a link to a Fordyce Castle brochure and floor plan that will be helpful to potential buyers.
Fordyce Castle and Baron Title for Sale
Scotland's Castles for Sale
Scotland has many other castles for sale that may pique your interest, whether you prefer the historically accurate, the mysteriously run-down, the suburbanic mansion, the romantically legendary, or the comfortably located. Several of Scotland's castles also include the title of Baron, so you would be buying not only a piece of property, but an immediate adoption into an ancient family of lairds and ladies, chieftains and lasses, of Scotland the Brave.

Blessings to you Jane
Wonderful hub. I would love to visit.
Great writing; I loved your introduction! These castles are all so cool, I am having a hard time deciding which one is my favorite. But if I got to live in one, I think I would go with Fordyce: little village, crooked walls, close to the sea... I'm hooked!
Great artical. Wish you the very best. Visit me sometime.
Good Show !!
How Beautiful and well-written too! Thanks for sharing.
Very beautiful castle. I usually found it in television. nice hub with excellent picture. I rate this Up!
Ahhh! I loved the introduction. It made me think of a good old gothic story!
Loved this one as well. One of these days I am going to get to Scotland (my dream). I'd love to spend three months at least going through these places, and getting the scoop from the locals....
Woodside Castle. Wouldn't I love to have the money to buy (and upkeep) that one!
Great Hub! I loved this just like the Irish castles hub! Such beautiful castles that I can always dream about living in one day... Thanks always a joy to read!
That would be a dream come true to own a castle in Scotland. We enjoyed our trip there last summer. I didn't get enough of looking at the castles so hope to be back again some day. Thanks for the interesting hub.
Ah. Fantastic. Here we go again. :)
Hmm. Considering I've not been to either locale, I'd hate to make a decision without at least visiting both, but just based on what I know of the two places, I'd have to say Scotland does seem more appealing.
Might I add I don't think I saw a single on here that I did not absolutely like...
wow - you made me dream, Jane Grey :) thank you for sharing!
How cool a project would it be to buy and fix up Westhall Castle? If only I had a few million pounds to play with....
Castles are beautiful buildings! Oh, how I would like to have one... The older, the better :-)
enchanting places...dreamy.
Midmar Castle looks absolutely amazing!
to live in a castle someday would be my ultimate dream. it's always interesting to find a great piece of real estate...especially one with such history! great hub!
Jane, thank you for sharing this hub with everyone! I really loved reading it! If only I had my own castle here in Chicago, lol. :)
I would love one of these! Wow, cannot image the heating bills and leaning it, etc. though. Awesome.
Ditto - -want one here too, please!
great read! I loved it
Wow ! I loved visiting castles when I went back to wales, brought back memories looking aT this !Do you get a commission if they sell via you?!
Wow, thanks for sharing this with us. Love the pics!
Wow, the pictures are breathtaking. I'd like to own one someday.
James - I had to say the same. It is Midmar for me. Absolutely gorgeous. The trouble is that money is a touch short and the climate, I suspect, would now no longer suit me. Still, that would probably take second place (just) if Midmar came my way!
Westhall Castle certainly has a lot of potential! An adoption would be just the thing for this lonely heart. I heard it was in utter disrepair, but from the pictures it seems like the fixing-up it would require is not impossible. At least it's not just a jumble of stone ruins, as some castles are. This one has a roof and rooms!
my best friend lives in the woodside castle :D
Seems sad that you could buy one of these castles for the price of a fixer upper in Vancouver, BC.
Although scotland has a really chilly climate. I have always enjoyed going there. I look forward to my next visit immensely.
Stan
Man, these are spectacular. I'm an antiques dealer and have a real love of history and these castles speak so much about our past and how we have come to be where we are today. I'd love to own a castle. Maybe one day.
Wow, what a hub! I'd love to be in a position to own one of these castles!
Haha awesome hub ! I've been to some of these places!
Wow great hub. I will be visiting Scotland but I won't be buying a castle, the thought never crossed my mind :D
I am certainly interested in buying a castle or in sharing the costs. I am an architect, and don't mind doing some renovation!
let me know if you're seriously interested
kind regards,
Astrid
Great read! Wow imagine if you had the money to just go and buy a castle, it may be a dream but it is a nice dream :)
Ever since I was a young kid, I wanted to someday own a castle. While my aspirations are no closer today than way back then, I still fantasize about it. I really enjoyed your article on castles for sale, and glad to hear that there are some available. Just gotta win that lottery... Thanks for sharing!
I've been to Scotland many times and I have to say they have it all over Ireland when it comes to castles. I would love to own a castle one day, one that would need very little work. I hear that it is nothing to spend 10-15 years rebuilding a castle oh, it's so nice to dream!
Awesome article,I'm 5.000.000 pounds away to own one of these!(Lifelong dream)
I got to visit Scotland for 3 weeks in 2005. Since a lot of my ancestors are Scottish, it was quite the event. I did 5 days on a tour to get my bearings, then the rest of the time on my own. I keep dreaming that I'll win the lottery and be able to by a Scottish castle. Fordyce is my favorite with Midmar a close second. Your article is fantastic.
I DO LIKE YOUR HUB...I AM HOPING YOU COULD PASS MY EMAIL TO ANY WITH AN OLD CASTLE THAT I COULD RESTORE. I AM RETIRING IN A FEW MORE YEARS SO I WOULD LIKE TO GET SITUATED NOW. I HAVE FAMILY IN SCOTLAND BUT WOULD LIKE EITHER SCOTLAND OR IRELAND WITH LOTS OF LAND BUT WESTHALL IS THE NEWEST LOOK BUT URQHART CASTLE RUINS IS ABOUT THE WORST I WOULD GO....my email is gerryvandyke@gmail.com I WOULD PROBABLY BE PREPARED TO BUY BY THE END OF THIS YEAR IF 850,000 POUNDS BUT IF ITS A RUINS AND RELATIVELY CHEAP THAN COULD BE VERY SOON...THANKYOU

No interest in purchasing a castle, but would enjoy staying in one outfitted for tourists someday. This was an interesting hub and enjoyed the photos.
