Pink and Brown Room Theme

By Jane Grey

Need ideas for your next home decorating project? How about a girls room, bathroom, nursery, baby's room or kitchen in pink and brown? The delicate innocence and feminine grace of pink has often been coupled with the stronger, richer stability of chocolate brown. Retailers are realizing this pink and brown theme is becoming a favorite, and have tried pink and brown polka dots, pink and brown stripes, pink and brown flowers, pink and brown plaid & paisley, and even pink and brown window-sticking photo dots. You name it, and you can probably find it. Use this page as an idea generator for your new pink and brown themed room.

A cheery and bubbly pink and white living room was featured in Country Living recently. Again, it's not overwhelmingly pink, but there's enough to give a playful, peppy feel. Notice the subtle dark brown cherry wood accents in the curtain rods, lamp stand, and leaning frame on the right.

Elegant and Subtle Pink and Brown Theme

The Barclay Butera room (above) is not what you'd normally think of if you were to think of a "pink and brown" theme, but even through its subtle clean lines and neutral tones, you will see the dominant colors are faint pink and dark brown, with plenty of gold and white to keep the room from looking too feminine.

Ruthie Sommers's office or study (below) doesn't actually have pink walls, but the insides of the open bookshelves and display shelves are painted a dusty pink color, and that gives the same effect, without overpowering the room. A brown paint that comes close to a dark beige makes a great backdrop for her pink and white bookshelves. Rosy rugs, vases, and even book spines echo the pink theme, but don't excessively match the pink paint used in the bookcases, so the effect is elegant and gentle.

Dark brown wallpaper, furniture, and rug and curtain accents give this guest room (above) more of a chocolatey brown flavor, while the darker pink cushions and flowers definitely imitate rather than contrast with the browns. This room would easily get too dark and dismal if it weren't for the tall windows, light-colored floor, and the surprising lime green and yellow accessories. Wallpaper in this room is "Dunloe" from Osborne & Little, Cameo Roses Rug is from Dash and Albert, and Shade Store provided the wooden-weave shades.

Remember, when decorating a room in a pink and brown theme, don't feel like you need to instantly buy new paint and cover all your walls. Brown is a dark color and a little goes a long way for absorbing all light in a room, and pink is sometimes intense and nearly always associated with girly-girl. Your desire for pink and brown decor can be easily satiated by a few pink or brown rugs, pillows, a new duvet or comforter, or even just a classy pink-themed painting or two. You could always paint the top half or bottom half of your wall pink or brown, then do white on the other half, and separate the two colors with a chair rail. Consider doing one wall in pink and brown wallpaper, or paint one wall in stripes of pink and brown (put up strips of tape to guide your brush) and leave your other walls a nice neutral color.

I never really thought about putting these two colours together, but they are quite eye catching and something to think about. Thank you!

E. Nicolson,

Pink and brown as a color scheme is relatively new to the decor fads, though little girls have been adoring it for years. I personally like the more "grown up" uses of pink and brown, because they're more subtle and not so overpoweringly pink! You're right, they are eye catching! Thanks for your comment,

Having always been a fan of pink it's refreshing to know it's coming back -- at least to some extent! Great info and thanks. Best, Sis

I have too, Sis, but usually in my wardrobe more than in my decor. I love the ideas these designers are coming up with for home decorating, though!

I love the idea to paint the inside of the bookshelves! It seems to cast a lovely glowing effect. Pink and brown is definitely a great color combination.

Rose,

I know, isn't it just the cherry on top?! I wish I were the one to think of it-- it really is ingenious for giving a little bit of color to a room without painting an entire wall.

This gives me an idea for my living room. I have soft brick walls which look rose..when I get new living room furniture..I could use brown. Thank you. I love decorating also.

Lctodd,

That's a great idea! I like the natural look of rose brick with brown and tan. Fortunately, there are plenty of furniture companies that are coming out with accent furniture in shades of brown, and even fabrics that aren't necessarily suede or leather. I think you'll find plenty to choose from!

Thanks, prasetio! I also love how it can look classy in a subtler way, or cute and spunky, depending on how you put together these colors.

Very true! The baby rooms in pink and brown definitely have a cute and spunky look, but with subtler shades and the introduction of lighter colors, pink and brown can also be elegant and classy.

What a great hub...I would have never thought pink and brown but it really looks good. I never thought it was such a popular color for nurseries!

Jane Grey profile image

Jane Grey Hub Author 22 months ago

CyFree, I think a lot of what makes them look modern together is the styles you often see them arranged in. For example, you wouldn't really think of pink and brown in a historical sense, or even in the context of country decorating. But it certainly has been becoming more popular! It started with clothing about ten years ago, and gradually has become a decorating combo.

Autumn, I like the idea of brown in a nursery because it is so easy to match with pink if its a girl, or light blue or green if its a boy. Glad to give you some fresh ideas! Thanks for reading.

I'm not normally a fan of pink but it can look so chic teamed with brown. Thanks for sharing some great room themes here.

Jane Grey Hub Author 16 months ago

I agree with you there, Word Custard, but as the years have gone by, I'm finding there are more and more shades of pink that I like, and more and more combinations of other colors with pink that really bring out the best of it! Thanks for visiting my rooms. :)

Fatima 15 months ago

These two colours do look lovely togather, but are the any other colours that can be incorporated with this?

Jane Grey profile image

Jane Grey Hub Author 15 months ago

Hello Fatima,

Other colors I recommend with the pink and brown themes are spring green, or cream, or baby yellow. It's good not to get too excessive when you are using three or more colors, because that can get overwhelming. Use your colors tastefully, sparingly, and choose one to be accent only.

I hope that helps!

Jane
